If the priest in question claims not to know about the contents of a memory stick he is using to present material to children, then that is a poor defencce because it is his business to know.

I would not use a memory stick for a presnetation without checking its contents first, and needless to say, there is no danger of any inappropriate images being on any stick in my posession.

The priest asking for - and being granted - leave from his duties tends to incline towards the traditional church approach towards the devient behaviour of its clergy - let's pretend it's not hapening, and with luck, it will all go away.

Any bets on this priest being moved to another parish once the initial furore has died down? Media URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-17885912

I'm in total agreement with you regarding the Catholic church's immense wealth, corruption and stupidity regarding contraception and HIV, but I cannot for the life of me see why you are so offended about this priest and his bit of gay porn. Do you seriously think that the majority of celibate people never think about or look at sexually explicit things? I imagine if every priest who'd ever looked at porn left as you suggest they should that there would be about 3 left worldwide.

I am not offended by it NOX, I am offended by hypocrisy.

I find the notion of living and working as a priest while being a homosexual to be incompatable.

If a priest looks at pornography (and if so then they should resign, even if it leaves three of them as you suggest) - then he is contravening the ethos by which he must live as a priest.

As I see it, living as a priest means living a priest's lifestyle, celebate and giving his entire life and being to furthering God's teaching, and living as an exmple of holiness for all his parishioners to see, and look up to.

That doesn't mean, all that with a bit of gay porn on the quiet!

A priest should be a priest with all that his vocation and profession calls for, or he should not be a priest.
Three too many for me NOX. Still with Andy on this one. Night all.x
Not a big fan of Catholic priests myself Gness with very good reason, but I still find this to be a storm in a teacup and yes andy I get what your upset about, I just can't see it worthy of being upset.See if this cheers you up Andy- Catholics on the Catholic church as a lot of Catholics percieve it, at least in Ireland.

Hard to call this one. I edit my village magazine, for which sometimes I need to work between two computers and a memory stick is often necessary. Once, when I'd left mine elsewhere, I grabbed the first one to hand and used it. If I forgot to scrub what I put on then somebody has a record of coffee mornings that will puzzle them. But what if I'd been the sort of person who might want to move indecent images from one computer to the other, and had forgotten my memory stick?
Hi. Still here. Had to go for a calm me down cig after thinking so much about priests. Now you`ve made me laugh NOX! Thank you for that even if I did see a few priests I have known. :-)
I know Gness, the thing about that is it's funny because it's true. I hate Catholic priests with a vengeance by and large for very good reasons but this made me roar when I first saw it.
This sort of thing will continue to happen as long as Catholic priests are single men who have to suppress the natural desire for sex. You don't get it happening (or at least not to anywhere near the same level) with priests /vicars who are allowed to marry as in other denominations.
I have several Methodist ministers, male and female, among my family all are married and have families. This seems to be to be a far more stable and sencible arrangement and makes them far more qualified to offer advice and guidance to others. The idea that a priest must be a single man who must remain celebrate is just plain wrong !
It's unnatural. Although if it changed it wouldn't do much good for gay priests.
Catholic priests aside, I wish I had a pound for every organisation that uses computers / the internet in dealing with its public, and has not put in place training and systems to make all staff aware of how to keep themselves beyond reproach and their audiences safe from offence.
Coming back to the Catholic Church, this is doubly annoying considering their resources. Their accountancy branch is very good though - so if every parent involved in this case takes out an independent case for compensation against the church as a whole, then it might prompt the church authorities to get off their vestments and do summat.
Gay or straight going without sex is abnormal .
I`ve always believed priests should marry if they wish but that will never happen now. In our society to allow marriage will mean having to allow civil partnerships and they would be discussing that one `til the cows came home.

Ironically, if you are a priest you cannot marry, but if you are married, you can be a priest. That's why in my original parish, we had three priests, two of whom shared the presbytery, and one who lived at home with his wife and four children - he was an Anglican convert.

How does that rule work? Simple - they are so desperately short of priests, they can bend their own rules when it suits them.
I`d forgotten they do that Andy. So if a man in a gay relationship requests entry into the priesthood what do they do?
Different theme I know but my mother worked her socks off for the same parish for sixty years. As her dementia set in the church became more distant. When I found a good home for her I phoned her priest to ask him to visit. He told me that as it was four miles away she wasn
?????? to continue. She wasn`t his responsibility and I could look for a priest closer.
Question Author
gness - i wish i could say I am surprised.

Admittedly the reverence with which priests weree held a generation ago is largely dissipated now, but in their day, they were like God on earth.

It came home to me when we visited my mother-in-law's home in County Wicklow. She was born in a two up two down rural cottage, one of seven chidren, and her mum died when she as seven years old and all the children were sent to the convent to be raised. Contrast that with the huge presbytrty in Wicklow town where four priests lived in luxury - the morality needs some serious questioning.

But even now, at nearly eighty, her reverence for the priesthood remains undimmed. A local priest was recently sentenced to twenty-seven years in jail for child abuse. Her reaction? "He always said a nice Mass ...".
My mother would have had a similar response,Andy. I`m glad she doesn`t know how she has been treated by the church since she became ill. If I ask her has she had any visitors she will always say the priest came of course. Not once has he been she she went there in August. When she dies she will be buried from that church and I will be the one to speak. Can`t wait. Not nice some will say but if I don`t I will regret it.
