It is important to note that they both have CURRENT machines, but both companies have new games machines in the pipeline.
Microsoft have an XBox out now, but a new XBox 360 is due out early December (may be hard to get one though).
Sony also have the PS2 out now, but promise a PS3 early next year.
Because both companies have new consoles coming out (and Xmas is near) there are some low prices around for current machines.
You should be able to get a current XBox or a PS2, for under a hundred pounds, probably with a game included.
Note that if you buy a current XBox the games MAY not work on the new XBox 360, so it may be a bad idea to buy a current XBox.
If you buy a PS2 then there are hundreds of second hand games around which can be picked up very cheaply, and they will all work on the PS3 when it comes out.
Even PS1 games (the box before the PS2) will run on the PS2 and PS3.
If I were you I would go for a PS2 with a couple of games bundled. Try ToysRUs or Game or one of the supermarkets.
I will add one more thing, if he has not got a games machine at all it may be worth asking a few questions before Xmas to see what he prefers.
Games machines are very personal things and he may say "I hate the PS2" or "I hate the XBox" and you do not want to waste your money.
Also, check he will be happy with one of the current models rather than expecting one of the new models like the XBox 360 or PS3.
PS2 and Xbox are aroun 100 wheras Xbox360 which is out Dec 2nd is 280 and would be the better choice if u could get it and willing to pay the extra. Especially as it will play most of the top selling old Xbox titles as well as the new titles.
PS3 is expected March 06 but only in Japan, it is rumoured Europe which includes the UK may not get the PS3 until next xmas and even then it will cost 399 at the very least.
PS2 and Xbox choices are like vehelpfulguy says "personal preferences" but i prefered the xbox over the ps2 having owned both simply as the graphics were slightly better and the games seemed a bit more maturer. But there is little between them to be honest.
