parlick fell cheese.....

the chain here in the states, trader joes, have it for $9.99 a pound (around 500g)......any of you wonderful ABer's ever had it or heard of it.....is it worthwhile.....

Amazing, you're in the States and i'm about 50 miles from Bowland where it's made, and i'd never heard of Parlick Fell Cheese until I googled it. Seems to be about £3.75/kg at supermarkets.
Must get out more lol!!

I haven't done an exhaustive search but it hasn't popped up on the listings at some of the more eminent cheese mongers I am familiar with. This suggests to me it is an OK farmhouse cheese but not worth making too much effort to seek out or pay over the odds for. It may be being sold overseas as the domestic market simply isn't interested and an overseas market might go for it as a curiosity.

I stand by what I said Nibble. None of the high end cheese mongers, who go off in search of high quality cheeses seem to have it listed. OK so a supermarket is selling it but that only means the producer has a high enough yield to satisfy the supermarkets requirement.

I standby my comment that it is probably an OK farmhouse cheese, but I have yet to see any evidence that it has the 'wow' factor.

If the link is correct it is alarmingly cheap, not necessarily a good thing for the producer or the supermarket.

Not at all FriedGreenTomato. I'm just trying to show to someone who isn't UK based that the cheese they are enquiring after may not be worth lashing the cash for.

As far as I can see, and I haven't been exhaustive in my search, Parlick Fell won one award in 2005. I'm just trying to give an objective view of the product.

Not just a mere 'OK farmhouse cheese' I saw this cheese in Trader Joe's when I was visiting the States from the UK. I was amazed to see how far it had travelled. I had remembered getting it of the deli in Sainsbury's back in England and I think it's the nicest firm sheep's milk cheese I've had from the UK in a long long time!!

Also, on further research of the matter I have found that the cheese is only available as a "spotlight" feature in Trader Joe's meaning that there is only limited availability for a short period of time which would suggest that the yield is that of a smaller artisan maker. I had to buy some earlier to ensure I was correct in my summary of a fine sheep's milk cheese and I was not one bit dissapointed!!! A truly fantastic cheese!!
