Does anyone know what 'married up one leg' means?

However, taking the two together, might it mean that if you married up one leg you had married into a good family and your status had increased. Whereby if you married up the middle leg (ooer) that you had met someone of the same status.
Just a guess, as I say, I really have no idea.
