Hi
To cut a long story short my dog is going to live up north with my bro in law tomorrow. He will get the time and attention he deserves. I have 3 small children so it's not easy for me.
Am I being selfish? It would be better for him in the long run
But I feel so bad and guilty. Im getting upset now writing this it's breaking my heart x

Do you know what sort of dog owner you are?

The best that there is!!!! You are putting the welfare of your hound before your happiness, I wish there were more like you in the world.
I know it will be sad for you but by the sound of it your dog will be all the better for the move and you will always have the joy of knowing how he is getting on and having visits and...

If he knows your brother, he might be better off.
You're doing what's best for the dog so there's no need to feel guilty. Dogs need time, attention and exercise. With 3 kids that can be hard to fit in.
Aw, fifi, don't feel bad, as sad as it is, the dog will be better off, dogs crave and need attention. On the plus side, hopefully you will be able to see him.
You know what really annoys me, people who get pets and then soon discover they aren't what they expected/can't cope and so get rid of them again.

However, I don't know your circumstances and at least you're giving the dog to someone you know who hopefully will be able to give it the attention it needs, rather then just lumping it with the nearest rescue centre. You're doing the right thing.
Maybe the dog is older than the children.
That's why I said I didn't know the circumstances Ummmm.

I got him about 2 years ago, just before I got pregnant with my youngest.
Evianbaby - I know how you feel, it angers me too but I could have thrown the towel in so many times with him but I never.
But you got to do what's best for the ones you love right??
He won't be short of love, attention, walks everything
He keeps looking at me with his big eyes, I wonder if he knows.....sets me of again
im sure your dog will enjoy the added love and attention he will get in his new home. will you be able to visit him in the future ? i dont think you should feel guilty.
The dog is going to be happy, getting full attention, and your life will be easier, so everyone wins !Understand your feelings though. And dogs do have that 'Look at me, I'm so loving' way with soulful eyes!
At least you are doing the right thing now, the dog will be getting a better life, no need to feel guilty.
You are being the best owner that you can be. You have put the dog's needs before your own and have found him a wonderful place where he will have a much better life than he could with you. That last bit is not intended to be critical of you, you can only do what you can. Please dont feel guilty over doing what is best for the dog.
fifi, you ARE doing the right thing for the dogs welfare AND your sanity, no need to feel guilty
i agree with all of the above. you are brave to let go, and are definitely doing the right thing. you'll get through this in time - and your relative will, i'm sure, keep you informed about the dog.

chin up .... best regards

Aww thank you everyone. It means alot that you agree it's the best for him. And I'm not a heartless cow
Divegirl I was expecting you to call me horrible owner but what you said was lovely. Off to find the Kleenex again xx
You are doing the right thing for the dog. Just please reassure me you won't go out and get another one any time soon. I am on a facebook group for 'pets for sale and wanted' - the majority of people on there are young families who are looking to rehome their dog because 'they haven't got the time for it' or they are expecting a new baby and the rest are people breeding 'designer' crossbreeds that they are trying to convince people are healthier than pedigrees, or Staffies they are selling for £100 because they have bred them and can't get rid. Then they say they want them to have a 'forever' home and are charging £25 'to ensure a good home' or they want them to go to a 'farm' home because they need lots of exercise!. All the other young families then want to take them on because 'they sooooo cute'. How can they afford the vets bills or insurance payments, not to mention vaccinations and food which every dog needs? It makes me very angry that it is so easy to get a dog and even easier to get rid of them. As the slogan says, a dog is for life.
I wouldn't send my worst enemy up north!
Hey Messi, it's not bad up here. Sun's shining, foreigners haven't found us yet (joke).
All I can say is when me and my brother were kids, we were surrounded by dogs both Mum & Dad's and grandparents and there were never any problems. The dogs just fitted in with the family and when Mum took us out to the park or wherever, the dogs came too. This is how I grew up loving and being responsible towards dogs. People always seem to want to get rid of them today as if they are just 'things' with no feelings at all. At least this one is going to a hopefully good home, but he'll miss his old one without a doubt. Sorry to put a different slant on it, but it's how I feel.
If you haven't got time to look after the dog, then you are doing the kindest thing you can. Don't beat yourself up about it.
