A few days ago I realised that my right hip was very painful when I put any weight on my right leg. Walking, especially walking up the stairs, really hurts. When i am not putting any weight on it ie sitting down, it is fine. I cant think of anything I have done to cause the pain. I am not overweight, just over 40, I take thyroxine for underactive thyroid and omeprazole for acid reflux. I am walking with slight limp now as it hurts too much to put pressure on that leg/hip. I cant get into doctors till friday so just wanted your thoughts?

Could be some form of rheumatism or arthritis in your hip. When I had it at your age (and of course still have it), I had an xray and they said it was not my hip that was the problem, but my spine. I can sit perfectly comfortably but have pain getting up and walking. But you should see a doctor and make sure of what it is. If it is of any help I take a large dose of cod liver oil in capsule form every morning and have done for years. I am sure this helps and have prevented it getting really bad. But whatever happens, see a doctor. You may need extra calcium or something like that, to prevent your bones getting any worse.

I do suffer from a bad back due to a silly accident a few years ago and have physio for that, but this has come out of the blue. I am on my feet all day re work and it is going to be very difficult this week. I look perfectly well and healthy, so its one of those things that is annoying more than anything.
Mine used to hurt, but only when I was in bed (I had a fall some years ago). I take Glucosamine and Chondroitin and found it really works.
It helps to use a walking stick Smowball, although you are young to do this and pride might prevent you doing so. If you can manage to swallow your pride you can put quite a bit of weight on to the walking stick and it is definitely a big help - I am of course speaking from bitter experience. Arthritis comes quite suddenly - doesn't give you much warning.

My husband, bless him, did suggest a stick yesterday - but like you say, pride kicked in and i said no way. Just dont think doctor is going to be much help, he is useless at the best of times!
Will look into the supplements you both have suggested. Have to go to work now : ( but will come back on after I have seen the doctor this afternoon. xx
I agree with Starby, although I am not "big"on supplements.

Take Ibuprofen 600mgms up up every 6 hours, if an when necessary.

Monitor the situation for the next 7 days.
If you have back trouble, then the hip pain might be caused by your holding yourself in a certain way to minimise the back pain. Its very subtle and you might not notice you are doing it. You could pop back to your physio?

Dont turn down a stick, they are very useful items :-)
if you use a stick it will take the pressure off and may reduce any damage being done.pride will go away when your spine is shot and hubby has to wipe your botty
I started getting arthritis in my 40s, so it's a possibility. However, it could just as easily be a postural problem, especially if you've been under a lot of stress recently, as you may well have been unconsciously tensing up. Depending on what your doc says, it may be worth joining a pilates course, as this can help with bad backs and sort out out postural issues.

Have had this for about 4 days now. Just seen physio (for my back) and told him about hip. He said may be linked to back but see what doctor says this afternoon. Am taking ibuprofen, bu not as often as you suggest sqad so will up the regularity.
