some people really get the euro tangled up with the EU. They aren't the same.
He was far more than the oft quoted Rivers of Blood Speech, so he could well be a hero to some, or indeed have been a very good politician.
A professor of Greek at the age of 27 and a man who rose from private to brigadier. I have no compulsion about expressing my admiration for his talent, intellect, patriotism and humanity.
ah yes, Enoch, the health minister who first started recruiting staff in the Caribbean in the 50s.
most people on here know the difference between the EU, and the Euro currency. As to us sinking without trace if we left, not sure why that would happen. After all it wouldn't stop us trading with European nations, just not tied to them hand and foot.
Enoch Powell was clever enough, (and he was a Professor of Greek at 25 not 27), but so was the old fella who emptied the bins on our street as a kid- he read both Latin and Greek fluently, was a soldier in a very different kind of army and gave me my great love affair with books when he caught me nicking a copy of James Joyce and told me he'd lend me anything I ever needed to read. There are many clever people, being clever is not enough, one must also be good, have integrity, not be duplicitous and not run with the fox and chase with the hounds at will. I'm no fan of Enoch Powell, he should have stuck to being a poet, he'd have done less harm.
The one thing one cannot accuse Powell of is duplicity. He even resigned his seat on a matter of principle. Still, this thread is about the EU, not Powell, so we'll leave it at that.
jno - you are right, but you wouldn't have one without the other
You are not from the North of Ireland Mike so your probably wouldn't see him as duplicitous, but since you don't seem to want to discuss it further, as you say, we'll leave it but Jno has made a good opening point on the subject.
Since the second world war Britain has made two disasterous mistakes.

One we did'nt listen to Enoch Powell.
Two we joined the EU.

Since then we have lost our car industry--our engineering industry and are
now unable to provide work for our youngsters.

Yes of course your right we should remain in the EU,if you like being downtrodden by Johnny Foreigner.
At the very least they should be pruning the EU budget as savagely as the countries are having to prune theirs.
