Enoch Powell was clever enough, (and he was a Professor of Greek at 25 not 27), but so was the old fella who emptied the bins on our street as a kid- he read both Latin and Greek fluently, was a soldier in a very different kind of army and gave me my great love affair with books when he caught me nicking a copy of James Joyce and told me he'd lend me anything I ever needed to read. There are many clever people, being clever is not enough, one must also be good, have integrity, not be duplicitous and not run with the fox and chase with the hounds at will. I'm no fan of Enoch Powell, he should have stuck to being a poet, he'd have done less harm.
