Vikings V Romans?

were the vikings good people ? And what did they ever do for us ? From what i remember from history class the vikings didnt do anything nice for us and although the romans werent that nice either they did build us some roads and bridges.The reason im asking is my sons going on a school trip in a few weeks and its all to do with vikings.I want to give him some genuine info about them,Thankyou.

Well they settled here and their genes are probably in many or even most Englishman, and many of our freedoms come from them and their relatives,the Anglo-saxons. But,of course, the Classicists ,think that along with 'Ph' instead of 'F' and split infinitives which are nothing to do with English, the Greeks and Romans are superior to the Germanic and Keltic races who gave us our laws and freedoms and YOUR genes.

Well the Vikings did a lot for me but then again I'm Danish so you're welcome to say I'm biased ;)

i'm no great expert but apparently the vikings have had a bit of a bad press. they're not all the raping, pillaging marauders that they are often portrayed as. many of them were farmers who came to britain to settle. they did have quite an evolved legal system and many of the raids were done, so they thought, legitimately as they believed vikings had a claim on the english throne.

perhaps one thing they did which is not greatly publicised is they were massive tradesmen and it is believed even went as far as india to trade something that helped increase wealth and knowledge, and perhaps cement britain's reputation as a seafaring nation.
