I hope to go to London first week in July. Could anyone recommend a decent place to stay? Reasonably central as I don't know the place well. Preferably not too expensive as well, if possible.

Have you thought of University Halls - all undergrads have gone. Sorry I don't have a link but you could contact directly.

Thanks, MarkRae
Dream the impossible dream.
The Ibis and hotel next door in Cardington Street are quite nice and outside Euston station so easy for transport as well. The Royal Scot Travelodge also in Kings Cross is a good one as well.
there are some south of the river between Waterloo and London Bridge, more or less close to the Globe, South Bank, Vinopolis etc and just across the bridges from the City/West End

my suggestion is to look now, as the Olympics starts in Mid July, but much of the spaces in hotels would have been taken already. Central will be fairly expensive, we have become one of the most expensive cities to live and work in.
There are lot of little hotels around St Pancras Station, doubt could find a link, but will have a look for you.
Have a look at www.marlinapartments.com same price as a hotel but loads more space and you have the benefit of a fully equipped kitchen.

I saw an ad saying this place had rooms from £35. Doubtless the ones without windows.

or furniture, 35quid in central London, blimey.
spotit, if I may ask, when exactly do the Olympics begin in London? and when will the crowds start?
my thoughts exactly, em. I can't make the booking link work at the moment but it does seem to be a proper hotel.
the Olympics will start 27th July i believe, but everything is going to kick off a lot sooner, for instance when the media move their goods into our neighbourhood, and then all the athletes arriving. so no one should expect to get much by way of a hotel in the centre, or so i was told by a friend recently, who works in a local hotel. They are booked solid for months.
Thanks em10
Travelodge still has rooms in Waterloo and City Rd for £70 per night. Otherwise take a chance with Laterooms.com and go for one of their secret hotels. You book a mystery hotel as it were and find out where it is once you get the confirmatin. But its farily easy to work out which hotel it is from the description.
