do i have to give my employer my temporary address

I live over 200 miles from work and live mon-fri in a caravan (legitimately) and now my employer has asked for the address of the van 'for postal reasons'. I have worked for this employer for over 2 years and have supplied my home address along with emergency contact details. I asked why I needed to supply this info as I want all my official post sending to my home address as I may move in order to keep my living costs as low as possible whilst at work. The reply was that they were needed to send any official notices to, surely if I have provided my home address and said this is where any mailings should go that is sufficient?

If they`ve got your home address and a contact number, I can`t see what they would need to send that is so urgent that it needs to go to your caravan address. If it was me, I`d tell them that I had signed an agreement with the Post Office to re-direct my mail to my home address so any mail they send to the caravan will go there anyway. They probably won`t have an answer to...

Why would you have a problem giving the address? It can come in useful. We had a situation recently when a colleague went missing and noone could contact them and they ended up sending someone round to check if they were ok.
Similarly there were two incidents in my street in the space of a year where people were reported missing, at least one by their work, leading to the police turning up, breaking in and both were found dead.
It doesn't seem an unreasonable request to know where you live on a daily basis when at work.

the 'van' hasn't got an address or a post box, all i could do is have mail sent 'care of' to the land owner i pay rent to. its just i think there is some other motive. I haven't had time off, less than 3 days in 2 years other than booked holidays, they have all contact numbers, yet insist that they need to send any officail mailing to my addrerss even though it is not permanent and have acknowledged i have moved several times to keep my expenses low. just seems wierd now especially as they are making staff redundant yet i have been told i am safe, but may need to send me a notice to confirm. which i said would be best sent home or officially handed to me, to which i would sign....
I think you are being unreasonable and I see no reason in law why you have to give them the address. Try suggesting to them that you consider that any 'official notices' should go to your permanent address not your lodgings address (try referring to it as your lodgings, not your temporary address).
I cannot think of a valid reason why they could need this unless you are entitled to claim travelling costs (because your current place of work is not your permanent place of work) and they suspect you of some infringement.
