I suppose you'd rather clog up the courts and customes when people are caught with a few grams of cannabis?
Doesn't sound a proper use of expensive court time to me.
These people should be looking for major drug smugglers not satisying the demands of outraged Daily Mail readers.

The people who read this stuff and exagerate from it that "Our doors are open to drug smugglers"
Strange they don't write stories about people paying their builders in cash and describe them as "fraudsters"
Newspapers are written by people of a certain type for people of a certain type and they make money by pandering to their prejudices
That's true of the Mail or the Telegraph or the Guardian or the Morning star

Worthy of another who reads the Daily Mail, mrs_o !
Open door to drug smugglers, eh? And, pray, what drug smuggler is importing the load at one or two spliffs at a time?
Dear old DM; as so often, if anyone bothers to read beyond the headline and opening paragraph, they are told rather an important fact which destroys the intended effect of the headline viz. that the police already only caution people who are carrying small amounts of cannabis within the UK . This practice has, in fact, been going on for a long time.
Still, you can't say the Daily Mail isn't educational. How many of us knew before that the maximum jail term is 14 years? (This odd maximum term is a feature of C19 legislation. Why a modern draftsman used it is a mystery)
