Having deleted some desktop icons, there are gaps remaining.
How can I re-align the remaining icons?

I tried that but not accurately aligned.
I thought there might be an automatic and accurate way, but thank you.
Right-click the desktop, click View and check Align to Grid.
I've never used Vista but with XP & 7 you just right click on the desktop and sort icons by whatever method you choose. They should then line up with no gaps.
