we'll be driving from cardiff to edinburgh next weekend, with an 18 month old in the car, so have decided t ostop off overnight to break up the journey. we don't want to veer too far off the m6 or spend too much money, but would like to stay somewhere where we can go for a wander and make a bit of a day/afternoon outing, so motorway services not ideal -anybody got any suggestions? found a lovely looking place in carlisle but htat's just a bit too far up, could do with somewhere nearer the lake district, but stuggling to find anywhere near enough to the m6. TIA xx

is this too far off the route for your liking?

Lancaster is an interesting historic city, and it's just a couple of miles from Junction 34:

(If the sun's shining you could even visit the seaside; Morecambe is effectively a suburb of Lancaster).

Kendal offers an alternative:

(Leave the M6 at Jn 36; it's only 8 miles away. Either rejoin the motorway at Jn 37 - which is just 6 miles from Kendal - or take the scenic route along the A6 to Jn 39, which is a 16 mile journey).

thanks all - i'd been looking at kendal actually so we may just head to there. I think we're going to try and get an early start and have lots of stop-offs along the way to stretch his legs - we may just keep going then depending on how the traffic has been up to that point.....wish us luck x
