Forget my post. Chuck's is a better choice.
these are called "energy monitors"....they are widely available through amazon, e-bay, etc or you could contact your electric supplier as they also sell them......a good model on the open market is called "The Owl".....they range from £20.00 to £50.00.......there's a little gadget that clamps to the cable near your meter and your power usage is displayed on the wireless monitor that you can take anywhere around the house

I have just looked on the British Gas website and there is a charge for the two energy meters that they have. Have I missed a page somewhere?

Sorry that wasn't the most elaborate of answers. I rang them and they said I would have to pay for one, or rather they told me they cost of it and in the next breath said they would send one out free of charge.
Bit of a scam I suppose as most people would just buy it on line, but mine is costing be nada!
You need to talk to some one in the Energy Efficiency dept.
