Don't know, Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfollk?

Mary Queen of Scots was executed.

Was there a point where the possibility of her death warrrant being issued occured beforehand?

It was Thomas Howard Duke of Norfolk..however I don't think Elizabeth was forced to sacrifice his life. She put him prison for scheming to marry Mary. After he was released he became involved in the Ridolfi plot to assassinate Elizabeth and bring Mary to the throne and restore catholicism in England. He was executed for treason.
In 1567.
Protestant noblemen forced Mary to abdicate in favour of her baby son. Elizabeth took her prisoner, thus saving her life. Imprisoned in England, Mary was the centre of repeated plots to seize the throne and restore Catholicism; Elizabeth finally executed her in 1587.
So in a way she did save her life only to execute her later.
Yes I was unsure because technically he wasn't sacrificed to save Mary. He was tried (and maybe flasely) found guilty of treason and then went for the chop.
