Chinese Lanterns

This is me being serious. I tease so much I have to start with that! I live on the edge of the countryside;lots of thatched cottages around.
There is a huge firework party nearby but what bothers me is how many lanterns are floating by. Are they a danger or am I being over imaginative about what happens if one lands on a cottage?

Boo. Thank you for that. Even more dangerous than I imagined. I`ve always refused to have anything to do with a balloon release because of the harm to wildlife. Will add these to my nag about list.

I live in a thatched house and they worry me as do firewoks (stray rockets etc)

lets hope they all float harmlessley by gness...i guess its a matter of luck really..maybe they are using the eco friendly ones...nevertheless its a worry in the area in which you live...

I would too, having lived in one in the Neths and seen a neighbour with thatch go up on NY's Eve - and we were six down the row of farmhouses, however, a good distance between the houses....

I'd be worried if they were closeby! I'm not far from Manchester Airport and they ask for people to only let them off in a certain time period on New Year's Eve to minimise any problems for aircraft.

A friend of mine is a vet and said they are also dangerous for cows.

I have a tiled roof and not much in the garden yet but from what you have all said it most be a worry all over with so many thatched properties.

I get so angry about these lanterns. I have seen lots on sale in pound shops. I think they should be banned altogether, so irresponsible!

I believe you can now get cow-safe ones but doubt that would stop the risk to thatched cottages.

No metal in most of them now jenna all paper and bamboo plus wax for the fuel. The first ones had wire but I think they are ''green'' now.

Of course I do have two flat roof extensions as in Howard`s thread and yes they are cheap.
