If you're selling a 2012 version, strike while the torch is hot! That sale was to collectors and dealers worldwide via live internet and phone, plus those who sent bids to be executed by Christie's and those in the the room. That's what the market prices are. It seems unlikely that anyone is seriously bidding the sums mentioned for a 2012 one.

But if you had the silver cup, awarded to the winner of the marathon in the first modern Olympics, in 1896, you got a bit more. It fetched £542,250. It was awarded by the organizers because the marathon was in memory of the heroic Pheidippedes, the original Marathon runner. They wanted one prize to be a reference to ancient Greece.

How do you have to qualify then Mick to carry a torch?
I thought the same as Deputy Sheriff that they were chosen in this way .........

They were going to be locals, but it's not worked out that way. People we've never heard of are bringing the torch through Dover. They've just showed Will I Am from the Blackeyed Peas carrying it somewhere in Devon - not even British.

What WOULD you do with it if you had a torch? For instance where would you display it? Its a huge thing - put it across the mantelpiece? Hang it from the ceiling in the loo? I wouldn't thank you for one - and as for buying one for those obscene amounts .......... they must be mad!
