Bootlid Lock/Mechanism Failure

I can't open my MGB Roadster bootlid despite the lock and key operating correctly. I suspect that the screw holding the release mechanism has loosened or come out completely. The rear bulkhead is solid therefore there is no access to the lock from inside the car unless I cut an access hole. Have you got any better ideas of how I can get into the boot, please?

Is it the chrome bumper or the rubber bumper type. I am wondering if you could get in to the boot if you removed the rear bumper maybe through one of the mounting holes.

Can you remove a rearlight and get access that way?

Just had another thought about this, do you think it would be possible to get a thinnish length of wire ( maybe a coat hanger ) between the back side of the boot lid and push it up past or through the rubber seal, you could then manipulate the steel hoop that the lock mechanism attaches it self to and hopefully release the lock.

I can't remember which way works best but try pushing the button upwards or downwards as you press it to give it better contact with the operating mechanism. I discovered this knack on one of the MGB's I look after having had a moment of panic when I couldn't open the boot, the button went in all the way but didn't feel like it had contact with the release mechanism. Hope this helps.

I would go onto a MGB forum Dave there are plenty around, by doing that there could be a very simple solution to save you causing undue damage.

I presume my earlier suggestion didn't work so my next step would be to drill away the button [start with small size drill and work up] so that I could get to the part of the latch that the button operates on.
