my 6 year old grand daughter has picked up head lice from school. Are there any tried and trusted home grown remedies, to help save a fortune on over the counter products ?

cheap hair conditioner and a lice comb, slather the hair in conditioner and comb it out using the lice comb, then repeat every week to ten days depending on when eggs hatch until hair is clear of lice.

Yep, conditioner works well, but you must do it every night for at least a week then every other night for a further week to ensure hatching eggs are removed - this will give the best results

IF you want to buy something to kill them all off in one go, you can use the Minor Ailments Scheme that operates at many pharmacies now that will entitle you and anyone who does not pay for scripts to get free nit lotion (other items available)

I would also keep your grand daughters hair tied back at school to prevent re-infection, believe it or not there are some parents that dont bother trying to remove head lice so another infestation is highly likely.

Using conditioner works a treat. Did you know some pharmacies (i know our local asda pharmacy does) will give you free head lice treatment if you take a deal louse (horrid i know, but it saves a fortune) as proof?

Also for when when your daughter's lice have died, you may get empty sacs which are stuck onto the hair like super glue. They too look like nits and even combing may not remove them.
douse the hair in white vinegar, wrap in cling film or an old towel for 20 minutes, then shampoo out. It dissolves the glue and you'll see them all being washed down the drain!

The best thing I recently found is a Nitty Gritty comb. It was £10 something from the chemist, but well worth it. It comes with a lifetime guarantee too. I wasn't getting any out with the normal comb that came with the solution but was amazed what was coming out with this. You just use it with regular conditioner.

Hi Jules, any kind of vinegar- cover the hair completely in vinegar for about 30-40 mins (dependant on the legnth less if short, more if longer.) then really wash it out with shampoo. once you have shampooed the hair put on condtioner and leave it in whilst combing the hair with the flea comb, make sure you have tissue to wipe the comb and get off ANY loose fleas or eggs and repeat as long as possible, my little sister used to suffer really bad with head lice and she has very long hair. Hope this works :)

We must have been made of hardy stuff in the 50s. My mum gave me an empty lemonade bottle and I had to go to the local garage to get it filled with paraffin.
Head was soaked with this and left for an hour. Took ages before I could get a lather again, but no more head lice. Grandkids have also suffered and their mums use the conditioner and comb method - much kinder than my mum lol.
