20 across: Attendants argue dreadfully after note translated (9)
I have 'altercate' but this messes up my answer for 9 down: Red-tops in cowardly campaign (6,5), the answer, I'm guessing, is 'yellow pages'. However, if my 20 across is right, 'pages' is wrong. Any help gratefully received.
Yellow Press is sensationalist and often unsubstantiated or poorly researched journalism. Often cited as one of the reasons for the Americans declaring war on Spain in 1898 after the sinking of the Maine - I think those papers were printed on yellow paper (?)
Thanks all. I did toy with 'yellow press' but rejected it because I'd never heard the expression before (even though I come from a long line of newspapermen).
