citreon c3 2003 water temp warning lights

my c3 has been working fine, but just used it temp on dash was fine , then it climbed up to the red for no reason!! checked water levels they are fine(never uses much water). so not sure what the prob could be??? anyone got any ideas??? dont want to take it to a garage for an expensive bill if i can do it myself!!!!!

Hi Rich, from cold, start your car up a nd wait for the temp to raise, the elec fan should come in when the temp is Half way, you have either a bad connection to the fan / Thermostat, check these first, DO NOT CHECK THE COOLANT WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT,
