Do a google search on "target mode", this may help.

Basically you connect both macs together, then press T while the one you want to copy from is starting up, its hard drive is then accessible to the other one. This may not help, as I understand it you need to connect them together using a firewire connection.

yes mattie, that's one other option. however, I wasn't sure if G3 had a firewire connection, and was even less sure that OS9 could transfer easily to OSX (I thought you needed OS10.2+ to use that feature with ease).

does anyone else you know have a zip drive, that also has a cd writer? or, your G3 will have a USB (i'm sure it does, but maybe only USB1), then you could get a usb flash drive (something like a 1GB size) to transfer your stuff across. you can get these for about 40 or so, and would still be very useful to you when you're using your G5 regularly too I would think.
