Oh my goodness! It all sounds so COMPLICATED!!! I have to work from 5 til 7 now. May try with yr advice this evening! Thank you so much for yr time etc etc!
On my HP Deskjet All in One disc, I get an initial screen on which the first option is "Install more Software". If you click on this and let it run, clicking on the appropriate answers from time to time, you'll eventually find that you have installed "HP Digital Imaging Monitor". You'll see a small icon on the bottom right of the screen near the clock.
Now when you turn your printer on and put a document on the scanner glass you'll be able to scan it just by pressing the button on the scanner - as you have done in the past.
I think that the problem has been that at some stage you have actually closed the Digital Imaging Monitor. I discovered from some info craftily tucked away in some cobwebby corner of the HP website that doing this actually disables the "Scan" button on the printer. Does that makes sense?

Thus all the complicated stuff that I've already mentioned may not be necessary. The disabling thing certainly seems to have a ring of authenticity about it and 'tis said that it's the simple things that go wrong - and one inadvertent click sure comes under the category of "simple".

I do so hope I'm right!!

Hi friend! One of my disc's is compatible with HP PSC 1400 series, 1500 series & Officejet 5600 series for all but VISTA.After inserting it, it says 'run' but FUJI FILM keeps appearing, which I down loaded a few days ago. ?? The other disc is HP PSC 1400 series User manual. Don't know if that is of any use to me or not. Nxt suggestion please!
The MyFinepix Studio disc is nothing to do with your printer. As far as I know, it's software that comes with a Fuji digital camera.
Have you run the "HP PSC 1400 series User manual" disc?
I would guess there's a lot more on it than a simple user manual. Why not launch it and open what will undoubtedly be a pdf file. Then press "Ctrl+F" to search the file, enter Scan in the search box and hit the small right arrow. This will take you to all instances in the manual where the word "scan" is mentioned.
This should help.
If not, it looks as if you might have to stick with the alternative methods of scanning mentioned in an earlier reply (either from Windows Gallery, Paint or, as Wildwood's suggestion, by installing IrfanView.
As you said, the scanner is in there somewhere, it's just a matter of being able to access it quickly and easily.
Have a good surf around the HP website, I'm sure you'll find it!
Over the last few days, I have actually followed my own suggestions just to satisfy myself that what I have said does in fact work on my F4180 PSC - and it does!

Hi Michael - it's me AGAIN! Havn't had any luck with either disc. I've managed to get to Scanner & Camera then got to Scan Profiles & noticed that HP psc 1400 is set as default. Then went to HP PSC 1400 scanner properties then Checked device settings but I have to provide a Host Name. Whats that? Also there's a small box to tick if I want to delete templates from the scanner when PC is shut down. So it appears your right - my scanner is in my PC SOMEWHERE!!

Bythe way - The device manager says this device (Scanner) is working properly.
Just a few more thoughts...
1. There is a comment somewhere on the vast HP website to the effect that the best way to install software (drivers, etc) is from the website rather than from the CD that was supplied with the printer. This is because the website is kept up to date whereas the disc was only current at the time the printer was purchased. Makes sense, doesn't it?
2. The website therefore seems the best place to start, especially if there is some confusion over which of your discs does what.
3. If you go to the Technical Support page on the website, http://h10025.www1.hp...ad&dlc=en&product=top and enter your product details and then click on "Find and Fix Common Printer Problems Using HP Diagnostic Tools ›" Then go to the third item down, "HP Scan Diagnostic Utility" and click on "Learn More". This will tell you the issues that this little program addresses. You'll see that it mentions some of the problems that you have described. Then go back and click on "Download Utility" and again, follow your nose through the procedure.
4. If this doesn't work, we are probably left with the Uninstall / Reinstall option mentioned earlier in our discussions. As I have aleady mentioned. this is not as daunting as it may appear and can all be done through the website.
(Weather-wise, it appears that we're in for a pretty horrible weekend, Andy Murray is out of Queen's so what else is there to do but sort your printer out? No need to answer that! Please let me know how you get on. Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to know that you'd got everything sorted! (Well, there are some things that would give me greater pleasure but we'll not go into them here!))
I suggest that you start with the diagnostic thing as mentioned in para 3 above.
