Do my employers have any responsibilities?

My employers of 8 years seem to have made me unemployed! I say 'seem' because they have not informed me of my being sacked or made redundant at all, and have not responded to emails requesting information. I've not even had any response or acknowledgment of my emails to the HR department either. What can i do about it? I was a Permanent part time employee according to my contract. Surely they have a responsibility of informing me officially about whether or not i have a job or if it even exists??!! Do they? :\

Can you clarify the details. If they haven't told you how do you know? Were you refused entry?

I know because my other colleagues have received phonecalls etc and had timetables emailed to them. I work in a college term-time. I get a new contract each year, but I'm a permanent part time member of staff. Usually, before being a permanent part time staff, we would recieve 'sacking' letters at summer telling us we were no longer required. But we would start back at the begining of the next academic year! I know of one staff member that recieved one of these letters and still has been offered hours!
Get on the bus (or in your car) and go and ask them. They can't ignore you if you are standing in front of them.

Yes, Redhelen, you are spot on.
Amus does not have permanent contract according to what he has told us. He has a part-time contract for 10 months which terminates. Then another one the same for the following year. And so on - at the behest of the employer.
Redundancy does not apply because he never achieves 2 years continuous service.
There is no reason to inform him at this time that he has been dismissed (or sacked in Daily Mail parlance) because he was dismissed last June.
Ergo he currently has no contract. QED.

Then why do I have a date of continuous employment on the contract? My last contract had no end date and was a permanent part time contract.
Then go and talk to your employer, then.
But I'm sure they'll take the same view as me.
A permanent contract that 'suspends' for 2 months with you still being under contract doesn't sound possible.

I was right! They duely compensated me too! Not a good employer.... Better off in my new job too.
