Putting My Foot In It

I went to visit a friend and her mother this morning. The mother has been diagnosed with cancer and had been given a couple of weeks to live. My friend is due to become a granny in December. I said to my friend's mother "I bet you are really looking forward to seeing your first great grandchild."
The poor woman looked so sad and I feel like a total sh1t for saying that.
