After Christmas and New Year things can go a little flat so am thinking of nipping off for a week's sunshine. Don't want to go to the Canaries. Can anyone suggest somewhere hot rather than warm at that time of year with not too long flight time. Would Egypt be good and if so anywhere you can recommend?

depends what your definition of "hot" is. the average daytime temperature for the red sea area, ie eilat, sharm-el-sheikh, etc is 18-22 degrees. Is that hot in your book?

Thanks I see what you mean I was rather vague about temp. 22 degrees would be very pleasant but 18 degrees may not be as hot as I would like.

just about anywhere in the med, and places just beyond, can be warm or cool in January, but also could creep into the pleasantly warm or hot bracket. You might be OK in Egypt.

But to guarantee pleasantly warm and dry you'll need to go further at this time of year. Try the Gambia, with average January temperatures of around 25 degrees (although it can be quite cool in the evening). Flight time around 6-7 hours, depending on departure point.

Well there are a number of Canary Islands and they are all very different, so how about one you have not been to ?.

Another option is Dubai. They are making a big push to attract tourists.

Had you thought about Singapore or mainland Malaysia? Cost of flights to S.E.Asia these days is very comparable to North Africa or Mediterranean. The quality of hotels is second to none at reasonable prices . Great food, plenty to do, exciting places to visit, No language problems. Give me the chance, I'd be off like a shot.
