Moor Hen chicks

About 2 years ago a fox killed all the ducks on our village pond. Now we have a common or garden duck and drake who look very contented and a Mor Hen family with 4 (or maybe 5) chicks. They're little 2" balls of black fluff with tiny red beaks. I don't know why but this has made my weekend.

It's always nice to see nature recovering from a natural disaster even on the small scale of a local duck pond

I used to live close by a river and had to cross an ancient bridge every time I went out to the shops. I longed for spring and early summer so I could stop on the bridge and watch the little mallards, and moorhens, as you said little balls of black fluff, and of course the cygnets. Later on in the season I'd have to duck to avoid low flying swifts, always felt better just for seeing the "waterbabies" on the river

I have been breeding birds for over 4 decades and still get a thrill when the chicks hatch.

We have them too, it makes my day to look out the window and see those little black pom poms bobbing about - so cute.
