Neighbours cigarette smoke
38 Answers
We live in new terraced houses with small gardens and everytime our neighbours go in there garden for a cigarette , there cigarette smoke comes through our kitchen window and patio door into our lounge . Being non smokers ourselves we find the smell very disgusting . When the weather is nice it is only natural to open windows and doors but why should we be subjected to inhaling the smoke ?
Does anyone have any information regarding the above .

^^^ a) Because as smokers go I'm actually relatively considerate and don't smoke right outside or below their open windows (we have people who live directly above our flat) and b) because I wouldn't be dictated to about where I stand in my own garden.
I'm unlikely to be rude (unless a rude tone was taken with me first) but I imagine my facial expression would give away the fact that I think you're barking to even ask.... I would then go in and chuckle to myself.

Even asking nicely wouldn't do it for me. I hate how smokers are demonised and can't do right for doing wrong. And the smokers I know are all like me and pretty unlikely to blow smoke deliberately in anyones immediate vicinity. Therefore I would consider this sort of request as seriously as I consider someone who develops a cough at a bus stop when I light a cigarette, am standing several feet away from them and we're waiting at a busy main road!
Sorry ladybirder, we'll have to agree to disagree on this. Until they make it illegal to smoke anywhere but your own home then outside is fair game to me.

If the anti- smoking campaign on the telly is to believed, there is an awful lot of smoke that can't be seen. Maybe that is where the odour comes from? However smokers have been castigated for too long now and to suggest they do not smoke near a neighbouring window is ludicrous. If any other odour comes in through open windows we all have to live with it. Keep that particular window closed if you know that is where they go.
