What do you have to do (and who through) to get an unrestricted bike license... the DVLA website has a 'Direct Entry' but this has only confused me. I thought there were different grade licenses for different cc bikes....say one for up to 600cc, one for up to 999cc etc etc. Anyone with a license know??

Any tips on bikes too....thinkin an R6.

The most basic is CBT (Compulsory Bike Training) which you will need to complete before going any further.

How old are you? If you are over 21 you can then go on to a direct access test which enable you to ride what ever bike takes your fancy though its best to take into account that jumping straight on to a sports bike is like putting somebody who has just passed a driving test into a ferrari.

If you're under 21 you can still learn on the bigger bikes and buy one but you'll be limited to an output of 33bhp. So if you do buy your R6 you'll need to have it restricted (must be done professionally).

I would also strongly that you don't get an R6 as soon as you pass. They're like a rocket on wheels which isn't as fun as it sounds when you're about to total it on a corner with oncoming cars and you don't have the experience to know what to do. I'm not trying to put you off - just I've been there (not an R6), done that and nearly kissed the ground with gratitude when I came out the other side uninjured.

Motorbikes have a very steep learning curve.

Could start off with a CBR400 or similar which can be incredibly fast then get a bigger bike later.

Oh, and welcome to the family : - )

Should cost you around 500-750 to do Direct Access if you want to do it in a week, check yellow pages and ring a Training School who'll advise you best.
