Exterior coatings

Old house built in mid 1940's from composite stone blocks. Damp is apparent on plaster of outside wall in one room & we think the problem is that the pointing has shrunk or cracked.
Have read up on lime mortars but wonder if there is any transparent smart coating that could be applied over the pointing & edge of the blocks.
I don't think a complete coating over the whole exterior wall would be particularly healthy for the building but I might be wrong?
Will appreciate any advice or contacts to follow up

Make sure your damp course is OK and not bridged by soil or anything else.

Hi i think i can help you. We tried thompsons before and it left a nasty shiny finish on the wall and quick frankly, looked awful. Try Clear coat (i think its called) from never paint again. It gets sucked into the wall, and it really does stop damp. Here is the url

HI. I have been involved in the building trade since the 1980's so I reckon I can answer this for you.! You would need to consider 2 different types of coatings. I have posted the links to what i think is the info you need.

Option one: Have the wall repaired (such as bad bricks and loose pointing) and have a clear coating applied like on this page http://www.neverpaint...ure-penetrating-damp/

Quite reasonably priced too. We had it done a while ago. It doesn't leave a nasty shine on the bricks either.

Other option is coloured wall coatings like this http://www.neverpaint....co.uk/wall-coatings/ a bit pricier but lasts for years, my uncle had his done 10 years ago (dont know what company though) and it still looks good, but i cant remember if he had damp or not?

Price wise not sure, best to contact a few firms like this and ask. hope that helps you.

Hi Alex, sorry for delay. I'm ready to get on with the job now. Getting the pointing done with lime mortar & havE contacted that firm for a quote. Thank you so much for your sound advice and contact.
