I have won a runners-up prize with the Telegraph when covering my mistake with correction fluid and overwriting so know it does not have to ruin an entry.
Unless there are published rules saying altered entries are unacceptable, then it ought to be OK.
Most of my entries use correcting fluid. Mind you I haven't won anything for years....
Actually not true - I did win one from a very low circulation magazine a month or so back, but nothing in a major publication.
A useful tip is to get the grid photocopied at the local copyshop at some 5 pence per time. If you are not sure of the answer, write in pencil and use a rubber for incorrect answers.
I note that the Radio Times crossword takes photocopied grids. In this case you could tippex out the error, photocopy and send in a clean copy.
