I have a flower bedW/SW facing but under a large Lleylandii which casts its foliage onto it. Is the soil likely to be acidic or akaline? I had hoped to plant a rose or two on it but neither that I've tried have been happy.I'll appreciate your advice. Thanks!

Leylandii grow anywhere so it might be acid, alkaline or neutral. Your local garden centre should have a soip ph test kit for a few quid which will tell you.
Not a lot of plants will be happy to be anywhere near a leylandi, they take all the moisture and goodness out of the soil.
..................... but Robinia stinging nettles grow happily beneath them and I have a quince that seems to like them - but not roses.
lol Lottie, I don't think nettles are the the first choice for a flower border :o)
They grow under every shrub in my garden, grrr.
But just think how the butterflies love them Robi!! Talking of which I have seen about half a dozen since the spring :o( (Butterflies, not stinging nettles - I am surrounded by them!!!)
