What is the purpose of the universe ?
I have entered this question in the religion section but I thought that it might be more appropriate here. Is it allowed ?
Let us accept the the fact that there are trillions and trillions of stars , planets and asteroids.
Now the bible claims that it was made by an entity we call God.
Clerics have claimed for thousands of years that we are unique , our world is unique and life is unique to our world.
If that is true what is the point of the universe . Why would God make something that dead and lifeless. Trillions of lumps of rock and gas travelling through space for billions of years seemingly for nothing.
If God created Man as an experiment, as is sometimes claimed , he could have done that by just creating our solar system at the most. Why waste all those creative powers on a useless universe.
One other possibility is that the bible and the clerics are all wrong and that there are countless worlds out there and the universe is teeming with life. It still doesn't answer the question . What is the purpose of the universe but it does make a little more sense.

Has it not dawned on you that to expect a debate with you on an abstract theological or scientific is a total waste of time. I'm not surprised you are unable to get on with your boss and colleagues, as judging by you posts you are unable to converse without resorting to abuse. The characteristic of a loser.
^^
Still no response pertinent to the question from Modeller then L O L
I think to expect a 'purpose' for the universe that makes any sense to human beings is starting from a point which rather over estimates our part in the whole wonderful, enormous, mind-boggling thing.
The imaginings and delusions of religous people over our history are no more relevant to such a question than reading tea leaves.

zeul # I think to expect a 'purpose' for the universe that makes any sense to human beings is starting from a point which rather over estimates our part in the whole wonderful, enormous, mind-boggling thing. #
I agree but as human beings we have always looked for explanations for the inexplicable . Logically we should have some answers albeit contradictory . Just because we can't find an answer, is no reason for not asking it. My main point is that if the Universe is a lifeless mass as many clerics claim then why have it in the first place ? On the other hand is it necessary in order to to conform to the known laws of physics, so that our world can exist . Our world requires our solar system , that's a fact and probably our galaxy but beyond that we don't know .
I'm not expecting a definite answer to the word ' purpose ' but its of interest to hear opinions of your aptly described # wonderful, enormous, mind-boggling thing.#

Itchy skin, unable to get on with my boss/colleagues, resorting to abuse ?
You've been so insensed by what I said that you've taken it upon yourself to scan over some of my posts to see if you can dredge up some 'dirt', good job I didn't mention my erectile dysfuntion ...d'oh !
...then you call *me* touchy !
"Has it not dawned on you that to expect a debate with you on an abstract theological or scientific is a total waste of time"
Is it ? Well let's try shall we - you could start by responding to my first post on this thread (can you do that ?)
"Thank you all with one exception for your contributions"
LMAO - talk about playing the 'passive aggressive' card.
Ok Mr Modeller, there are some pretty juicy answers to your OP and you don't seem to have been able to get to grips with any of them (except one by Zeul) - hence my "wakey wakey" comment. Yet you accuse me of being a waste of time re scientific theological or abstract debate.

Yes I have looked at your posts , and they are typical of someone who likes to dish out criticism but can't take it. I should imagine you have worn out the asterisk key on your keyboard the number of times you use it .
I would point out many questions especially those of a hypothetical nature are put in a way to provoke ideas and debate between ABers rather than to obtain a definitive answer. I realise that concept may be alien to you.
I thought my question also made it clear that I don't believe any of the theological explanations that I know of for the creation but would be interested in any new ones or if there is a scientific hypothesis for the universe being in its present form.

Answerprancer As you appear to be losing sleep and unable to understand my original question . I have reread your first answer to see if it has any merit. Like most of your posts it contained criticism but no attempt at answering the question. As such it didn't warrant a direct reply .

# You ask this as if it's taken as read that a human concept from some dubious story book is a real option. Wherever you plant this question (science, religion, TV, chatterbank etc) you are still basing it on the assumption that you've 'got it right' and that existance of matter/time/space has to have a "purpose".#
Where did I say or imply that I considered the biblical story of creation had any validity ?. And ' got it right ? On the contrary I challenged the
the whole concept and pointed out that the universe as I/we know it has no purpose. Which prompted the hypothetical question for debate . Has it a purpose ?

I've wondered about this question before, this is the jist answer I got (from a Christian perspective): It could be that God did it because it simply looked nice. Not only is God an epic engineer, he's also an artist (which is evident here on Earth). Because he's God, he could create a universe like that. A lot of people say the Universe isn't very efficient as an argument against the existence of God, but efficiency only makes sense if you are limited in both time and resources, God is limited in neither so he could take his time
