Hi All,
I'm thinking about hiring a classroom in a school to teach card making to Adults once a week. The School has asked for a First Aid Certificate (together with an enhanced CRB).

Checking online the course is about £130. As I would be lucky to clear £12 a week from my teaching this is too steep for me.

Does anyone know of a way to legally get a first aid certificate without these costs?

I'd look at local colleges and places that run Adult Learning courses as they often run certificated First Aid courses that anyone can join. Costs will vary but shouldn't be as high as £130

How about volunteering for the St John's Ambulance ? They will train you, and as you are volunteering, I doubt that you would be charged. Obviously that route involves a commitment from you and loss of some of your spare time, but it would give you some very good training.

If you are working, why not see if your workplace needs another first aider ?

One other suggestion. It would take up some of your spare time, but it could be rewarding in a personal way. See if your local ambulance service needs any Community First Responders. Part of their training is in first aid, patient care and assessment, but it does go way beyond just first aid. There are different first aid certificates. It depends what they require you to have. I think there is one that takes 6 hours which covers emergency first aid and includes resuscitation for which you get a 3 year certificate. However, First Aid at Work costs a considerable amount of money and takes 4 days to complete. As mentioned earlier posting you could join SJA or Red Cross. CRB's cost about £36 for enhanced one.

you won't need a CRB to work with adults, unless they are vulnerable!

If you are working your employer may be able/willing to send you on a course if it is advantageous to them.

The other option would be NOT to hold the course in a school classroom - go to a local hall or community centre instead, just book a room there.

I assume you have looked into hire charges for the school classroom. I know they are pretty expensive. I suppose it depends if other things are going on at the school at the same time.

A CRB is only really necessary for teaching vulnerable adults or children. However if the classes were held at the school during the school day they can ask for one. Many schools follow county guidelines but can make their own lettings policies.
I agree that a village hall might be a cheaper option - would be worth seeing what their conditions are

also many cafes and other businesses have 'seminar rooms' available cheap or free, esp if you buy your refreshments from them!

The Big Society Huh! Impossible to help by passing on skills or volunteering without it costing a fortune or needing sheafloads of paper work. Would love to help in my area but it is all too stressful.

Try hiring a room somewhere else. Is there a village hall or social club you could use? No need for either First Aid or CRB to teach adults card making.

Thank you all for your answers. It's an awkward situation as The school has good facilities, and is offering a community rate for the room. I will see if an online course would be acceptable. Apparently it'S their policy for all to have an enhanced crb, so I'll point out the vulnerable adults /children's comments and see if they'll pay! Thank you all again

CRB's cost between £35 & £40 so I doubt the school will pay for it. You can always try. Maybe they like people to have enhanced CRB's due to possibility of schoolchildren still being on premises whilst you are doing your card making course. It is certainly worth mentioning that you won't be teaching to under 18 year olds or vulnerable adult. I believe a 'Young person' is classed as up to 18 years of age so if you have 17 years of age on the course I believe you will require the enhanced CRB. Good luck with it.
