Could my Fridge/Freezer explode.?
29 Answers
At present the kitchen appliance is still functioning; albeit unsatisfactorily. The Fridge is OK but quite often there is a strange sound which appears to come from the Freezer section and the internal temperature no longer goes below minus 10 degrees centigrade. The sound is similar to mail being delivered through my front door letterbox or that something has fallen within the Freezer cabinet.
I am not too bothered about the temperatures because it is so very rarely that I keep frozen meat or fish. At present there are only vegetables within the cabinet.(Chips, peas, peppers, sweetcorn, etc.)
No doubt the best advice would be to buy a new appliance to replace an item which is over 28yr old. However, I am endeavoring to delay matters for as long as is safely possible. Consequently, I would welcome comments on the basis of what is the worst that can now happen to what has been a remarkable item over the years for which I have had it.

The least I can do is to give you a quick up-date on matters.
Today I have ordered a replacement fridge/freezer and hope that I am not guilty of unofficially advertising in AB by mentioning that it is a Hotpoint Model FFA52; bought 'on-line' from. Argos. It is scheduled for delivery within 5days, so I will post further when it has arrived and installed.

Just out of interest to anyone who is still threaded into this item.
I purchased a new fridge/freezer from Argos but a short while ago I received a telephone call, direct from 'Hotpoint', who have arranged with me for the item to be delivered next Monday. The purchase price of £319.99 includes delivery and the old appliance being taken away. I was offered extended Insurance but declined on the basis that if an electrical item lasts 12months it can go on indefinitely.(As did my present one. 28yrs)
In the meanwhile, I have got accustomed to the minor 'explosions' from the old Hoover f/f and hope it continues working somewhat o.k. until the arrival of the new appliance.
I'll keep you posted........Ron.
