My OH is a HGV driver so I know how long the hours are, how hard the stress can be and how little the rewards are.
For HGV driving regulations, please see http://www.hgvcity.com/regulations/
Then scroll down to the paragraph"Drivers'Laws Rules and Exemptions
I wouldn't know about the wages for HGV drivers, but their time at the wheel, driving is bound by law. Rests and days off should all be accounted for by a good driver and employer. Tacho offences are looked down on by the Police and the Highways Agency, who do random checks on Haulage companys and take the tachographs for checks. It is the international driver we should worry about. Boris from Bratislava is a b***ger.
A lot of information here, it seems the answer is £450 t0 £600 a week

and around 8 hours a day plus loading/ unloading.
Many UK jobs being taken by Eastern Europeans but in return qualified British drivers are in demand in Australia and a few other places.
What? Am I wanted in Australia?

Because I am worth it
£600 I would be more than happy to earn half that a week!! however, I wouldnt drive anything for a job.
Everyone is different. I couldn't drive for a living because it makes me too sleepy.
