Failure to boot up properly - Windows ME

A computer which operates with Windows ME has stopped booting up properly. It starts fine, then at some point in the process the message saying that there is not connection comes up - the one you would expect to get if the monitor was on, but the computer off. The computer will start in safe mode, but I've no idea what to do about it when I get there. Any ideas?

reinstall it or have it reinstalled. best switch to XP or if u r unsure go for Windows 2000 tat is the hardest rock of them all

You can do an overinstall if you have the CD: boot from the CD and pretend that you are going to install it for the first time. However, when it comes to where you install it choose C:\windows rather than the suggested C:\windows.000 This will replace the OS but should keep your drivers and applications. Before this, in safe mode, I would copy your data to a new folder on the C: drive called backup which shouldn't get overwritten (don't format the drive or anything like before the overinstall).

Both of these sound like good answers. Unfortunately, however, although the computer seems to be happy to boot from the Windows disk and to begin to read it, it won't actually start the installation process. It simply seems to hang at "Setup is starting Windows". I left it for ages and nothing happened.

Any further ideas? This is driving me mad!
