I've had a dry tickling cough for five weeks now, at first the doc prescribed Amoxicillin but it didn't touch it. I went back last week and was given some Clairitin 500ml and some tablets to loosen any phlegm, as I haven't got anything to cough up. Seems to be at the back of my nose and throat. Two weeks ago I started waking up each night about 3am sitting up to cough and being unable to breathe really gasping and wheezing.
Mrask has had to bang my back and press my stomach, I've been having these do's three or four times - not every night. It's really scarey I thought I would die. (thank god I didn't need mouth to mouth I think he would have let me die). Told the doc and he prescribed the loosening tablets, but they haven't loosened much yet, at least I haven't had another bad do since. On the other hand Mrask has had the cough for about 2 months now, coughing up phlegm all the time, the doc gave him some antibiotics and said he would have to let it run its course, they can't give him anything else because he's on warfarin and other heart tablets. So he isn't sleeping very well. He is a bit desperate and will be going to the doc again tomorrow. We are both feeling a bit off-colour with this virus.

I was going to suggest going back to doc....i think theres something doing the rounds unfortunately :0(

Sudofed is great for me to break stuff up if you fancy trying that. Might be instead of, rather than alongside your prescription meds!!

Tried the old boiling water and holding your face over? Olbas oil?

Poor soul...nothing worse hope you are both better soon xxxx
this has gone on far too long !!!..get back to the doc and don't be fobbed off...you may need chest x ray ??
What is your question?

Tinks I thought about buying Sudafed but not sure weather they would interfere with the antibiotics. But then I suppose the Pharmicist will ask what I'm taking. I did the Olbas steaming thing tinks it did ease it. x
Murraymints Mrask has been for his chest xray he is OK. When I went to the doc last Friday she said that if I'm still coughing on Friday when I finish the anti-biotics I will have to go back to see her and she will arrange for me to have a chest xray. It seems now to be in my sinuses and the blockage in the back of my nose is causing the tickle in my throat hence the cough.

Sorry sqad, I'm feeling a bit scared to go to bed at night because of this non-breathing, I panic. My throat had been very dry when I wake up always at 3-30am with the tickle in my throat, but nothing to cough up. I have been able to sip water but if I catch my breath I can't do that.
a good hot toddy..whisky, hot water and honey..may help you both to get some sleep at least..pprop yourself up a bit in bed...keep airways open...
It would seem that you may have developed a degree of asthma or early COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and may need inhalations of steroids and further investigation.

You are seeing the doctor tomorrow and there is little more that you can do tonight.

It would also seem that the same may well apply to Mr Ask.

Keep us informed.

Thanks sqad. x
Try this method of breathing as instructed by my physio. Open your mouth wide so that it is a round apperture and take a deep breath, hold it for a few seconds and exhale as hard as you can. Do this six times and rest for a minute then repeat twice more. You should find you will bring up phlegm shortly after. Good luck.
A long shot but ask the doc if they have considered Whooping Cough. It causes gasping and persists for over three months if untreated.

It is making a comeback because of the reduction in immunisation rates.

Thanks carlton I'll try that later, made me dizzy a minute ago lol, Beso I did consider whooping cough because of the wheezing noise I made I heard that that is has made a comeback. Hope it isn't COPD. I have to wait until I finish my antibiotics before I go back to the docs so I'll see how I am on Monday morning.
