where do you start when floor tiling, middle of room, back corner or what?

Start in the centre (approximately) of the room about parallel to one of the walls. Very few rooms are truly right-angled, and few walls are truly straight. From this tile work to each wall to form a cross on the floor, then fill each quadrant. You can, if you prefer leave the edges ragged until the end of the job, and do all the tile cutting in one go. (this also means that if you have hired or borrowed a tile cutter you only need it for one day). Also this means that you are not forever changing tasks from laying to cutting and vice versa.

Do as Octavius said, but lay the cross of tiles dry to start with. You can then see how big your cuts will be at various places. You can then move the start point so that you have similar size cuts that balnce and look so much better.

i hope you haven't tiled from the centre of your room, i'm imagining the mess. i would recommend tiling from the corner most opposite the door, and if it is a kitchen run the tiles under the units to save cutting.
