I think this relates to the decay of isotopes of certain elements the decay which can be measured in terms of time. eg 'carbon dating' for a wood sample to give the the age of the tree. I hope this is helpful but I'm sure someone will come up with a simpler answer!

Yes, I had another look this relates to isotopes of uranium which can date marine sediments back over a million years. see ecyclopedia Britannica !
