I asked a few weeks ago if you went to Antique Fairs etc. Now I have another question..... what, if anything, do you all collect? I have a theory that the younger generation don't collect as we did; apart from CDs and guitars, my own son doesn't collect, neither does my DIL. We often hear on programmes like Flog It "oh my children don't want it". Are collectables going to die a death? What are your thoughts please?

I have every Private Eye from issue 363 to now.....
All of Ed McBain, Dick Francis, even John Francome, Jenny Pitman, Jack Berry etc
Used to collect cards sent by others radio amateurs to confirm contacts by morse. Keen collector of seasoned wood for our stove and full whisky bottles but my collection never increases.
You would enjoy a visit to my dentist DT.
What number is the current issue of Private Eye?

Ooh, wait, I have issue

(stomp stomp stomp ... fading)

(stomp stomp stomp ... coming back)

... 1,314.

JEEZ, DT ... you have a thousand copies of Private Eye?

How do you have any space in your house?

Would you like me to hire you a skip?
Not exactly my collection but I've got about 20 boxes full of corgi/dinky cars and hornby trains in the loft gathering dust which were my father in laws
Question Author
I bet they're worth a few bob Elvis.
Actually, JJ, they take up four plastic boxes, approx 2ft by 1ft and that's all.....
Brother in law has another 40 odd boxes in his loft, there must be thousands worth, must get round to selling them soon
At least they are useful, DT ... unlike most things that people collect.

The odd copy that I buy keeps me amused in Starbucks, or on the loo.
You want to get on Flog it Elvis, dinky toys are worth a bit especially if they are still in their boxes.
My BIL is a mad keen Elvis fan he has everything collectable of him, he goes to Auction Houses to find stuff.
Haha ..get yourself a couple of kids ..I have boxfuls of Classic Car magazines ,Beano and Dandy comics ,Annuals, football sticker albums ,boxes of assorted little cars.Lego ,assorted football boots ,cricket bats and God knows what up in the loft .
Hang on to them Mother ..they might be worth something one day ....yeah right :)
I also have the whole of my late Ma in laws possessions stacked up there too .
Nightmare .
How sad DT. Late 1960s took the Private Eye guys out on the town in Cardiff. They wanted a strip club with gambling. Not a problem, staked me and I won 50 quid!
Lol shaney, my mum's got all my old beano and beezer annuals in her loft
Lol Elvis ..your Mum has my sympathies :)
Not sure why it is "sad" - it's a reasonable 'alternative' record/history to the multi-faceted development of these fair Isles, warts and all, IMO. Interested in your explanation to the negativeness of your remark as I genuinely am curious to such a pessimistic reaction to the fact I have a small stash of our politico-socio-economic history.
I collect blue and white china, but to use not hoard, I have a great sellection of mismatched dinner service and all the serving dishes to go with it.
Also collect recipes from magazines and tv progtrammes, I have 8 lever arch/ ring binders with everything categorized. I also have in the loft hundreds and hundreds of BMG (Banjo, Mandolyn and Guitar) Magazines that were my fathers, dating back to 40's/ 50's 60's. Don't know what to do with them but can't throw them out.
