Does anyone know which is the best airport to fly to to be within closest reach to the city centre? Also, what are the cheapest flight companies to go withfrom the South west UK area?

By all means, fly into the airport at El Prat. The train is right at the main terminal and the cost is only 2 0r 3 euros or at least was the last time I was there. It leaves every 15 min and takes about 20 min to the middle of Barcelona. The only way to travel.

I thought that Barcelona had only one airport....El Prat.
The difficulty is that Ryanair advertise flights to Barcelona - they are in fact to Girona, about 1.5 hours away on express bus.
However Girona itself is beautiful - and is a fast train ride from Barcelona.

But don't land yourself there thinking it's yer actual Barca.

Thanks Mosaic, so for closest to the city i should look to book to El Prat?? If so, how far away is that from the city centre?
El Prat is about 30 mins to Barcelona city centre by taxi.

Buses are frequent about every 10 mins and take just over 30 mins.
It's about a 15 minute slow train journey. From the airport you walk across a long elevated bridge to the train station

Also watch out for anything going to Reus airport...thats about 50 miles SW of BCN, but is also advertised as being Barcelona.

Best beloved works at Edinburgh Airport he tells me there's another airport that serves Barcelona called Reus - not exactly on the doorstep though I'm given to believe
We went with Ryanair and leanded at Girona. Got the bus into Barcelona ok. Didn't realise there was hardly any back. Cost us about £80 in a taxi to get back to the airport.
We used the bus from Girona to Barcelona and the train back to Giona, the bus out to the airport goes from almost opposite the station.
Yes, we saw where it went from but there were only a few each day, whereas the one from the airport to Barca was nearly every half hour.
Did a bit of looking up. Reus airport is about 100k from Barcelona and would cost about 200 euros from there into the city!
beware of pickpockets at the airport and in barca groups of children smile, chat and target.
