just hiring the vehicle seems costly enough as it is, and what other expenses and considerations are there?

Have no idea where you are heading or what country you have in mind, but stopovers can add up very quickly in a campervan.
petrol costs.................
remember you can't just park up anywhere (much to my sister's disappointment) - you have to book ahead on registered campsites (so that costs, too).
i gather you need to plug in an energy cable too, wherever you stay. All seems like a nice idea renting a motorhome and "going anywhere", but it's nothing like as simple as that.
dont think the MPG is the greatest....hardly an areodynamic vehicle...
Some have a 'free mileage limit' included in the rental. Anything over that you pay for.
Remember to use your mirrors, it doesn't take long for a queue to form behind you and they might not all be on holiday with time to spare.
