do you still see it near you or do your locals use the loan sharks, last time i saw someone use the slate was in a pub in manchester town centre about 11 years back
the reason i ask is i saw a bloke who i use to see in the pub from years ago and i stopped and had a chat with yesterday and he had got himself in debt with the dwp stopping and then restarting his benefit

One of my local shops will let you 'buy' bread and so forth until the giro arrives. The do have a sign saying 'No Credit' though, but presumably it's ok for regular customers for a few pounds for a few days.

Dee Sa in the late seventies there was a pub in salford and people who had problems or wanted advice on benefits would go in and see this person
you would be expected to buy a drink for yourself and buy him a pint because of the number of people every afternoon going into to see him the landlord would charge you his pint and put it on a tally.
he would then have free drinks in the evening and at weekends
people would sit and wait ages some days just to get his advice he was very well known and very clever when it came to dealing with benefit problems
