Portable air conditioning units

Does anyone have one of these?, I am looking for one but I keep finding mixed reviews everywhere! any recommendations?

I have a couple. Unless you get one which has a hose pipe to hang out of a window, they don't work at all...

The technology often involves evaporative cooling. Basically This blows air across a moist cloth. They only work in very low humidity. In the UK I would say forget it.

Ok . Mine was in store for a year and now at back of shed.I will haul it out later and try it to confirm my memory. I bought it to cool a massage room 14x14ft.
It was ok. Not fantastic but not poor enough to regret buying.
Where I really appreciated it was at night in the bedroom. It was good enough to make a muggy night comfortable and had a timer so it didn`t go on all night.
Mine must be six or more years old so may have improved.
I will check mine tonight and post again but would I buy another? Yes

Looks like they don't make them any more, but anything similar would be fine. I disagree totally with the comment that they barely work and make a lot of noise. Mine works beautifully and makes hardly any noise.

Cazzz. I have fished out my air con unit. Challenger, and still in Argos at £70. After all it`s been through it still works perfectly and is fairly quiet. I know I couldn`t have it in the bedroom if the noise was unacceptable. There are obviously going to be far better ones for more money. Perhaps you can buy,try and return if not satisfied. Hope this helps.

As soon as his mini heatwave started I did a bit of research on these and have binned the idea because I don't want a window or door open with the hose hanging out. As well as being unsightly that would be letting the hot air, flies and mozzies in. So I looked at the coolers, but they make the room humid which for me is as bad or worse than the heat. So I gave up at that point.

You are right Ladybirder. I have a cooler not conditioner! See. Dippy if it has a plug on it: However one thing mine does not do is make the room humid. Quite the reverse. I used it in my massage room for years and I could never have massaged through hot summers in a humid room. For what I wanted it for it was ideal. I think it`s suck it and see Cazzzz!

gness, as I've never had one I got my information about the coolers creating humidity from this article, last para. I'd like to think what it says is wrong but ...

Thanks ladybirder. I wonder if aspect or other conditions make a difference to the humidity? Mine works not on fins but a length if fabric and mesh on two rollers. Bit like a roller towel. It moves slowly through iced water with ice blocks in and the air blows through.
It was on for an hour before a client arrived, in a south facing room with closed windows and created a lovely atmosphere. Clients were impressed. On a hot day I could have charged for them to sit in the room with no massage I think. More than a few clients bought one during one of our rare,very hot summers.
I guess it has to be tried. Mixed reviews on Argos but many as pleased as I am.

The ones with the ice are ok, better than a fan alone, but not anything like as good as real air conditioning that extracts the heat and shoves it down the pipe to the outside.
