a cable is a hundred Fathoms a fathom is six feet

so a cable is 50 yards !!!

Would that not be 200 yards?
sorry I think the answer is wrong but can work it out 100 fathoms to one cable and fathom is 6 feet.= 2 yards. these are correct got them from book hope its help you work it out...
I think a chain is a tenth of a nautical mile, which is a standard mile plus app. 15%. So that would make a chain app. 196 yards.

Sorry pega, if a cable is 100 fathoms and a fathom is six feet, then a cable is six hundred feet. Therefore a cable is 200 yards.

The dictionary definition is one tenth of a nautical mile, which is, in Britsh practice, 6080 feet. This would give you 608 feet. I think that 200 yards would approximate, 202.666 would be accurate

Clayhead, that is just confusing. A chain is 22 yards. This one is all about cables.

A cable is 200 feet - this from an ex-Naval Officer!

Well the ex-Naval Officer is wrong! Think you mean 200 YARDS do you not, gardenknowin?

Sorry, I meant CABLE not CHAIN - I will concur with 200 yards!
Oops biley - yes I meant to put yards, but had a long day and aching feet were top concern!
