car stereo/ head unit

hi
wanting to hubby a new stereo for the car for his birthday, one with a usb on the front. but ive noticed there are car stereos and head unit, can anyone tell if these are the same thing...a head unit and a stereo?

Yes, one and the same. They are called the head unit if you use an external power amp.
Beware though as most cars these days have a stereo purpose designed into the car. At worst you will not fit a standard DIN spec unit in the car, at best you can with an adaptor. Depends on the car.
Make sure it will fit first. Also look for the highest power output for best sound. 40W x4 is common on cheap ones. 50w or 60w is much better.
