I am getting about 5 silent calls a day and the number displayed is
07863 298405.
When I try to call back the number is unobtainable.
Does anybody know what this is as the calls are becoming a nuisance.

Try Googleing the number Marcia, see what comes up.
Buy a referees whistle...that should dissuade them.
07863..India unless you have relatives there avoid .
Mattk what a useful website.
07863 is the SDT code for the Indian state of Chhattisgarh.
They ring several lines at the same time and speak only to the first one to answer. "Have you had an accident in the last 5 years?". " I am a Microsoft engineer and have detected a fault with your computer". etc. etc.
It will be a call centre.... as said probably in India.

Call centres these days get a computer to dial a list of numbers, when one is answered they then try to transfer the call to one of their staff, if none are available you just hear silence.

Oftel records show that numbers starting 07863 2 are allocated to Hutchison 3G UK Ltd. Note that due to number portability if an individual number has moved to a different operator this information is not publicly available.

Oftel's last recorded change for this number range was April 2003.

register here and the calls should stop:

as has been said, the calls are done with an automated dialler - -when you pick it up the system then looks for an available call handler to take the call - if no one is free then you just get silence. They are not malicious, but are very annoying!!
Annie... the TPS service only covers calls that originate from UK organisations.. if the caller is a foreign organisation they are not bound by any UK regulations.
Hmmm - that doesn't seem right chuck, bit of a loophole! - however, a lot of the calls from India are in relation to UK organisations so I guess it would at least cut down the numbers and also means that your number is less likely to be sold on.

How does that work when there's no one at the far end to hear it?
We get one every night about 7.30 our telephone registers it as International caller, so we ignore it. But Johnny Singh caught me out yesterday and called back during the afternoon, wanting me to answer a survey, I refused said 'no time just going out to work'. He was pleading for me to talk to him, I hung up.
Chuck - do you know if Anonymous Caller Rejection is effective?
Well it wouldn't be in this instance because the call isn't anonymous, the caller is sending a number. It would just stop any calls from withheld numbers but that's it.
Thanks for the answer Chuck. Can I elaborate?

I have received various withheld number calls. So Monday this week I registered with Telephone Preference Service and subscribed to Anonymous Caller Rejection from Virgin Media.

I still received unwanted calls. Afterwards when I dial 1471 it says caller withheld number. So it seems ACR does not work.

Maybe it only works when people in UK prefix their call with 141.
Any service like that tends to take a couple of weeks at least to become effective.
Many thanks again Chuck.
