I picked up on R4 Today this morning that this whole thing was a misunderstanding of a piece of attempted sarcasm, i.e. "Yeah of course I fell off on purpose, ha ha".

Now I can't find any reference to this story one way or the other on the BBC site, so I guess they're looking into it ...

I watched him talking on BBC Olympic Breakfast this morning and he definitely said it. The others were shaking their heads though as if to say you're really in the doo doo now. But they all agreed it is an accepted part of the sport.
