Old man cycling...

Hi
Please can you help, my father is 75 years old and despite several TIAs/Strokes and a high degree of deafness he is still active – he likes to ride his bicycle every day. This however combined with more traffic in the locality has caused a problem, one of his neighbours has complained to me twice now that he is dangerous on the road (on his bike) and caused a minor accident last week (a van driver hit another car swerving to miss him). I spoke to him about it but he didn’t know it had happened (apparently he rode off oblivious) and then got very defensive, I am worried he will cause a worse accident and someone will get hurt can anyone advise? Should I speak to the Police or?

It would be a great pity if he had to give up cycling, it is sad that there are not more off-road cycle paths as there are outside the UK, separating cyclists and vehicles. Check with leisure activity or tourist information facilities covering where you live, and see what dedicated cycle routes exist. 'Sustrans' has developed a network all over the UK. using disused railway lines and canal paths etc. Some ideas; could someone take him out by car (bike rack, folding bike) to a suitable place. Maybe you could find someone to share this with. Everything is possible, there are even sainted people who take out the blind on the back of tandems!
